Opening of the Human Rights Poster Exhibition
After the presentation of the Justitia Regnorum Fundamentum Awards (The Ombudsman Award) on 15th June, 2012, an exhibition of human rights posters, organised jointly with the UN Association of Hungary, was opened in the building of the Ombudsman's office in Nádor Street. Numerous international organisations contributed to the success of the exhibition, among others the European Ombudsman, EOI, the Council of Europe, FENTSA, UNHCR and UNICEF.
Prof. Máté Szabó, Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, and Dr. Ervin Gömbös, Secretary General of the UN Association of Hungary, both stressed the importance of awareness of, respect for and protection of human rights, for which, as demonstrated by this exhibition, they often try to act together with other institutions promoting the enforcement of human rights.
In his opening speech Secretary General Dr. Ervin Gömbös underlined among others: ‘For the UN, education is a fundamental human right and one of the most effective means to promote human rights in general. The purpose of human rights education, whether or not provided in an official framework, is to promote the universal culture of human rights by way of innovative methods of education, by disseminating knowledge and by changing attitudes. Without exception everyone has human rights, but if we are not aware of them, if we do not demand that they be respected and if we do not protect our right – and the right of others – to exercise these rights, they will remain merely words in a document dating back to several decades. I am convinced that this exhibition here will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about human rights in Hungary.'
