The Minority Ombudsman participated in a prominent social and cultural event of the Slovak community in Hungary, the Day of the Cultural Heritage of Slovaks in Hungary, which this year was hosted by Bükkszentekereszt (Nova Huta). The event was organised by the National-level Slovak Self-government, the Parliamentary Advocate of Slovaks in Hungary and the Cultural Institute of Slovaks in Hungary, with the support of the Municipality of Bükkszentkereszt and the Slovak Nationality Drlf-government of Bükkszentkereszt.
The varied programmes were provided by the regional centres of the Cultural Institute of Slovaks in Hungary - Acsa, Bakonycsernye, Békéscsaba, Budapest, Ecser, Pilisszentkereszt, Sátoraljaújhely-Rudabányácska, Szarvas, Tatabánya-Bánhida, Tótkomlós and Vanyarc - as well as Bükkszentkereszt and Répáshuta, presenting their unique linguistic, cultural, material and gastronomic values to the community as a whole. As an accompanying event, participants were also able to visit the institutions of the National-level Slovak Self-Government, as well as a book launch, the opening of a local history exhibition and film screenings. Children were invited to participate in playful activities.
The Day of Slovaks in Hungary has been organised in connection with the feast of St. Cyril and Methodius since the first establishment of the National-level Slovak Self-Government in 1995. 5 July is a public holiday in Slovakia, the day of the 9th century missionary brothers.
