null CULTHERMIN conference at the Parliament

The interparliamentary conference on "Cultural heritage and the identity of national communities" concluded the parliamentary programme of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event was held in the Parliament on 4-5 December 2024, and one of the keynote speakers was the Minority Ombudsman.

During the two days of professional dialogue, Europe's linguistic and cultural heritage, the protection of Europe's nationalities, the protection of nationality identity for both majority and minority, and related good practices in Member States or regions were on the agenda. The participants were delegations from the relevant committees of the national parliaments of the European Union and invited guests from some European regions.

In her speech, the Minority Ombudsman stressed that there are many old and new challenges that make it difficult for minorities to survive. She called for more cooperation, adaptation and a complex approach to ensure successful minority protection, taking into account the diversity within nationality groups, and recalled that the European instruments for the protection of minorities, developed 25 years ago, are still able to ensure respect for diversity rather than national homogeneity.
