On 10 December, the annual meeting of the Thematic Working Group on Roma Issues, which brings together 15 NGOs and public institutions under the umbrella of the Working Group on Human Rights, was held. At the request of the Chairperson, Attila Sztojka, State Secretary for Social Opportunities and Roma Relations, the Minority Ombudsman presented her experiences in the field of cultural autonomy of the Roma community, self-government system and socio-social challenges in recent years.
Elisabeth Sándor-Szalay gave detailed information on the number of cases she receives, their structure, case-load trends and presented reports and general comments on the cases concerning Roma for the period 2020-2024. In her presentation, she stressed that in 2025 she will continue to monitor segregation trends in the domestic public education system, the possibilities and limitations of taking action against widespread drug abuse, the experience of prosecuting hate crimes, and the representation of nationalities, and in particular the Roma community, in domestic school textbooks.
At the end of her presentation, she stressed the importance of relations and cooperation with professional partners and nationality communities.
