null COMMEMORATION ON THE ROMA HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

The Minority Ombudsman attended an event organized by the Holocaust Memorial Center, the Roma Holocaust Memorial Committee and the Ministry of Interior on the occasion of the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day (August 2) and was the principal patron of the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day organized by the National Roma Self-Government.

Dr. Tamás Kovács, Director of the Holocaust Memorial Center, Katalin Langerné Victor, Deputy State Secretary for Social Inclusion, Dr. Dezső Máté, sociologist, Roma and LGBT activist, and Attila Sztojka, Director General of the General Directorate for Social Equal Opportunities, spoke on the memorial day. The memorial was enriched by a joint artistic production presented by András Mata, from the Gypsy Soloist Orchestra and the Romano Glaszo Ensemble from Budaörs Tanoda.

As the closing moment of the event, participants placed candles of remembrance at the victims’ memorial wall, and then watched together Róbert Papp’s documentary titled “Doomed to Annihilation”.

On the Roma Holocaust Memorial Day organized by the National Roma Self-Government, alongside Elisabeth Sándor Szalay, János Agócs, the President of the National Roma Self-Government and Éva Fahidi, a writer, actor and Holocaust survivor also delivered a speech. Oszkár Nyári, theatre artist, the ensembles EtnoRom, Romano Glaszo and the orchestra of Norbert Fehér and Gyula Váradi helped the commemoration with their artistic performances. At the event, participants laid wreaths at the memorial plaque on the wall of the National Roma Self-Government’s building.
